I love this photo for the starkness of the walls. This was taken at a hogwan (after school academy) in Korea where I dropped in one day to say hi to some friends. One thing you have to know about Korean schools is that learning isn't fun for students and I think this office reflects that--I'm pretty sure no one ever had fun in here.

Oh how I love this photo! These funny little crabs--thousands of them!--were combing the beach, digging through the sand looking for food and then balling it up when they were done. The would scatter quite quickly the moment you approached so I had to be very slow and very patient to get this photo. Isn't it wonder how the eyes and the translucent body camouflage this little creature so that he looks like little more than more balls of sand? There are so many beautiful and fascinating creatures on this planet!

Chances are that no matter where you are in Southern Thailand, you're never far from a rubber farm. Farmers strip away the bark of trees and like maple syrup, it runs down the tree and into a bowl where it looks good but smells quite bad.

A few years ago, I watched the sun rise over the Pacific on New Years Day from the eastern shores of South Korea. Of all the times I've stayed up to watch the sunrise, this was my favorite. You can see balloons at the top of the photo that were released at the first glimpse of the sun--it was such a grand way to start the year.

Walking across Sydney Harbour bridge is not on most tour itineraries but it should be! The views are amazing. You can also pay about $200 to suit up and strap on to a rail as you climb over the top of the bridge. I would love to do it by like most touristy things in Australia, it's a bit too expensive. However, you're bound to get a good workout in! Instead, walk across the bridge--it's free.

Ferries run back and forth all over Sydney Harbour and I often wonder how many water traffic accidents there are a year. The other day we saw a man jump off the boat and on to the dock--against the advice of the crew--and no one did anything but yell. Idiots.

This is Swamni. He was my guide at Lahore fort and a very gentle and energetic man (though this photo hardly shows it). I almost never pay for site guides just because I don't want to encourage the behavior of so many who just attack tourists the moment they arrive, harassing them incessantly to pay an inflated price for poor service.

However, Swamni was different and it was his smile and little happy dance that won me over. I'm I was happy for it. Pakistani's are the kindest people and Swamni is most surely their leader. He led me through the mosque, telling me all of it's history as well as his personal story (he's been doing tours there for 17 years) and showed me were all of the good places were for photos.

Sometimes, it's just better to go with the flow and pay the locals for a little guided tour.

It rained almost the entire time I was in Cambridge but on the last day it broke for a few hours and I managed to get this incredible photo just before sunset. I just love these colors; they are so warm and inviting. This is what fall feels like. :)

Some interesting things to note about this photo that makes it work is the vector lines and their concluding point. You'll notice that the sides of the river, the boats, the bridge, and the fence all intersect at an invisible point in the trees. This is what makes this photo technically good as it leads the eye through the full length of the frame to that everything is tied together. To make your photos more balanced and subconsciously pleasing to the eye, try composing them with vector lines in mind and aiming to put their intersecting point somewhere in the top 1/3 of the frame.

I once went hiking with my best friend Joe up at the ice caves in Baker National Park. We shouldn't have gone in because it's not uncommon for them to collapse, but against my better judgment, we did and what we found was sublime. This is a waterfall that runs off the cliff above, down the face of the mountain, to the ice cave below where it continues it's trip down the mountain along the ground. It is an absolutely beautiful and mysterious thing to behold. Ever since I was a kid I always wondered what was behind those ice domes and seeing it once and for all was satisfying.

Taking a camel across the Great Sand Sea (Saharra) in Siwa, Egypt was by far one of the best experiences of my life. I can only say that when you look out at all of that sand and such a great, vast emptiness, you feel small and it really does evoke wonder and fascination.

This is an old hanger converted into a fruit market in Yerevan, Armenia. We were quite the spectacle walking through there as we were very obviously foreigners. Everyone was trying to get us to buy their goods and they even offered us quite a few samples. In the end, we bought some dried cherries that really weren't too good.

Georgians build churches in the most beautiful places. This church, Tsminda Sameba, is far above the city of Kazbegi just 20 km from the Russian border. This church was used in medieval times to store treasures of the crown during invasion as the church was basically unassailable on top of a high mountain, nestled beneath a glacier. Today you can drive right up to the church though we still chose to hike.

I can't pin point what it is about this woman but the closest I can get to identifying why I love this picture is that she exudes a vast measure of inner strength and grace. She is beautiful. I saw her while climbing the steps up to the elephant barn in Lahore Fort, Pakistan.

Christmas Eve in Jeomchon 2008, my wonderful Korean friends showed me how to party! Karaoke ("norae bang" in Korean which literally means "sing room") is a very well loved past time in Korea. The reverberater is always turned up high and the music is annoyingly loud (as in, I can't think because it's so loud), but when you've had a few sojus, you don't mind too much. It's nice to just go and make a fool of yourself.

I felt this blog needed a little blue today. Isn't that sea just the most amazing color you've ever seen? Sometimes I don't know if I take amazing pictures or just visit amazing places. This was taken in Ko Lao Liang off the western coast of Thailand. It's a private island accessible only paid tour groups. I went with Intrepid Travel while I was teaching in Korea.

Yesterday I went out to Liverpool to do those food photos for Crown Catering. I had so much fun! Just thought I would give you a sample of what I did:

It was lots of fun and I really look forward to seeing them again in two weeks to talk about how the photos came out. While I was there, I also learned that they used some of my Tall Ship photos for an full page ad in the Telegraph (daily newspaper)! I had no idea! It's so wonderful to see your work being used. I feel so proud and accomplished and I hope that my little success in the past few months is an encouragement to some of you who might be dreaming of making your passion your career too!

A few months ago, I did some free photography work for Sydney Harbour Tall Ships in order to put some new pieces in my portfolio.

Well, the owner called me back today to tell me that they absolutely LOVED the photos I did for them and want me to come do more! So, I'll be heading out to Liverpool next week to do some food photography for their catering business--and they're going to pay me too!! This is such great news! It feels so good to be recognized, thanked, recommended, and called back!

I'll also be going to North Sydney this week to do some more photography for AIPE (Australian Institute of Professional Education) as they are having a big Australia Day celebration. Let's hope they like the photos and I get a little more work!

Darling Harbour

I'm not sure how this blog works anymore. I can't seem to get things up as quickly or as often as I wish I could so I'm just going to abandon the whole everyday part and do the when I can part (though I vow to do it more than I have in the past). That all means I need to change my blog titles. I think that is a positive change though as it will help me and others when they want to sift through past posts. The way I see it, "019" doesn't say much about what's inside the post and that's not helping when myself or anyone else is looking for something in particular.

That being said, I went out to Darling Harbour yesterday after I shared lunch with Jeremy. It was hot, clear and perhaps a little too sunny but I did pull off a few interesting shots. Hope your week is off to a good start too!

I stayed in this quiet and peaceful room while traveling through Melaka, Malaysia last year. This guest house was pretty good with really quiet, almost empty rooms. It was so good to just relax here.

It's not well focused but it doesn't really matter if you ask me. I think the message is conveyed. It says, "Welcome, come in and rest." The only thing I would really change is that it's a little unbalanced visually but I'm not sure if that has to do with where I set up my tripod or how I set up my tripod. If you look at the ceiling, you will notice the lines across it are not parallel to the frame. I wish I would have caught that when I took it...

I can't believe I haven't posted this before. It's one of my all time favorite photos.

I love trains. I love them for so many reasons like the fact I don't get motion sickness on trains and that you always meet interesting people on them. Trains are wonderful. This photo was taken on a train from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi in Vietnam. It was a crazy long ride! We literally sat on the train for 52 hours. You just wouldn't think that Vietnam was so big by looking at it on a map! But it is. It's deceptively big.

By the time we reached this point (a protected forest just north of Hue along the ocean), it was almost dusk and a big storm had moved in which made the sky a menacing gray. It was completely magical. Unfortunately, by this time our carriage had been hijacked by a couple of snotty women with whiny kids and we were forced to leave. By I didn't mind too much. We moved to a sitting compartment where I could hang out the side window for as long as I wanted. Don't you just love the feel of a cool, moist wind in your face? I do.

Another recycled photo. This one is from the city sports assembly day while I was teaching in rural Korea. My girls put together some really cool cheers and dance moves which spelled out the school's name from the bleachers. They were so well coordinated! They won the cheer competition and the envy of all the other high schools. I was a proud mama.

One thing I love about Koreans is their sense of unity and the passion they exhibit when it come to acting as a group. This girl here was yelling her lungs out as they sang school's song. I really love how she fully committed to it (and I love how I captured it).

Why this picture works: her arm leading to the upper-left corner forces the eye to look at the whole photo; and the up-raised hands add to the emotion in her face and give you a sense that these people are cheering for something. What takes away from this photo: the girl in the bottom left corner who's face is cut off. It would be a lot better if her whole face was in the frame or not at all.

I didn't make it out today either so I recycled an oldie from my Korea stash. I loved going for walks in Korea because there were always people outside and lots of interesting things to capture like narrow and windy alleys and elaborate doors. This girl was really anxious to have me photograph her!

Despite not going out today to take photos, I did meet up with some other locals who want to start a photography group. I was a little taken aback by their reluctancy to actually share finished products and by one guy's negativity. I'm not quite sure if this is really going to be a good group for me as I really want some people to work closely with and get good, kind and constructive feedback. But we'll see. I'll do a couple outings with them and see how things go!

I didn't make it out today but I spent some time going over some old photos from my trip to India and editing them for the first time. I didn't even know I had this little gem in there but it's beautiful and the colors came out amazing. I just love my fish eye lens. There is nothing that brings me more joy.

A lot of people are quick to discriminate against fish eye lenses but most people have never used one and most people have never even seen a good fish eye photo. The trick to taking beautiful photos with the fish eye is knowing what exactly that you want to exaggerate.

The cool thing about this park is that it's actually the site of an old brick factory that has since been torn down though some building were left as heritage pieces such as the smoke stacks. No one can believe he's actually 19 in this photo! Jeremy and I went out to Manly Beach today as I had yet to visit. I wasn't feeling too inspired by what I saw though. Just lots of people tanning. And speaking of tanning, apparently the ozone is thinner over Australia which is why Australia is the leading country in the world for cases of skin cancer. I was burnt after just 15 mintues in the sun--not joking. I don't know how these people can lay out there for hours...

Okay, so I missed this day (and another day). Do you really think it's possible to take photos every day? I've been thinking about it a lot and surely I can make it a habit to take lots and lots of photos each week but I'm not sure I can truely commit to every day. Why? Because my camera bag is HUGE and I can't really take it everywhere with me. Also because I work and that eats up most of my week days (I have to make money too). Maybe I'm setting my sights too high? I'm afraid that if I spend too much time focusing on this goal to use my camera everyday then I might be neglecting other more important goals liek building up my blogs more, creating a website and finding more photography jobs...

What do you think?

In the meantime, I'll be posting some of my old photos for days that I've missed.

I decided that since I was taking down the tree today, I would try to upload a photo of the beautiful thing. I couldn't decide which I liked better but purely for sentimental reasons. The first is obviously better executed but the second is meaningful.

A couple years ago, my mom and grandma sent me this Christmas ornament while I was living in Korea that had a voice recording on it and they all sang me a Christmas song. Fast forward a year and Jeremy and I were having a small and quiet Christmas celebration in Dahab, Egypt. We were backpacking at the time and didn't really have much money but the Christmas was special because it was Jeremy's first Christmas (his family is Jewish). I had forgotten to put that silly ornament in a box when I packed up my stuff and sent it away so it went with me in my backpack all the way around the world. When Christmas day arrived and we needed a way to celebrate, I decided to give Jeremy the ornament.

It was the perfect gift. A few days later, Jeremy and I would be leaving each other for one month while he went to Iran and I went to Malaysia. I suspected (correctly) that it would be really difficult for us to be away from each other for a whole month but figured this little ornament with a voice recorded message from me and a photo of us on the front might make things a little easier for him. I fixed it all up Christmas day while he was in the shower and also wrote a little love note which I secretly stuffed inside the ball with the battery because I knew he would take the thing apart at some point and try to figure out how it worked (and I was right). He loved it. And two weeks later when the battery died and he had to open the thing up, he loved it even more.

So, this ornament means a lot to us and we hung it proudly on our tree this year. We didn't have much money this year or many decorations but having each other was more than enough.

Obviously I failed in my attempt to take 365 photos--one for each day--last year. But that doesn't mean I have to quit. I'm going to try again and this time I'm really committed to it.

I think one of the main reasons why I didn't get too far with it was that I was traveling and sometimes internet is very unreliable and infrequent (I would really like to update each day). Another reason is because I just lost my motivation along the way.

But I feel newly inspired after watching Julie & Julia today. I really want to achieve what I set out to do with this blog and I'll need your help! Comments are IMMENSELY helpful! They help you know that someone cares and that you're not alone in your endeavor. So please, stay with me!

Hm. I've come to the conclusion that I reallllllyyy need a new camera. My current one is getting on a bit and now has a few dead pixles which is no good. I really don't want to go so in depth in my editting. I'm also finding that a lot more of my stuff is coming out unfocused which is no good if you want to do well in this industry. I really need a camera I can count on.

So, I'm going to sell my soul. I'm going to finish an application I started in March 2006 with iStock Photo and actually try to make some money. I figure that if I can make a few hundred dollars over the next couple months selling random crap, it'll be worth it. Even if those photos are sold for peanuts. Even if the price I get paid does not really measure up to the creativity and the artistic talent which I put in to them. Why? Because at the end of the day, selling a few for a little in order to buy something that will make my photos sell for more (and hopefully more frequently) is an over all gain in my opinion.

I'll let you know if I ever complete that application. haha.

So, I've been doing some reading today on Flickr about how to market your photos and make money both through stock photo sites like iStockphoto and Getty Images as well as through private sales (primarily within Flickr) and I've had a lot to think about. I plan on posting something on it later so please keep reading this blog. I think it's pretty useful stuff for anyone who would like to make a buck or two off their photos. Plus, I've also been meeting some success with all this recent advertising for my photography. Today I'll be photographing the Newtown City Festival as an official photographer for the City Centre. Lots of good stuff to follow, I'm sure! So be ready! This blog is going to explode this week!!

Yesterday Jeremy and I went out to Bondi beach and did the Sculpture by the Sea walk. The Sculpture by the Sea exhibit is a free outdoor gallery of local artist's work. Some of it is really abstract and other peices are just fun and silly objects that you can esily interact with. I'm sure you'll have no problem figuring out which kind I like the most... :) It was absolutely beautiful and a perfect sunny day for photos and I had so much fun. Check out a few of the day's catch:

There were these big mirrored boxes out on the rocks and one had a triangle peep hole through the middle. Of couse I would stick my lens down it! Then, whenever someone put their face up on the other side to look through, I would hear horrified screams of "There's a camer in there!" from the other side. Too funny!! But the photos came out really really cool. Kind of like a kalediscope (I'm am sooo sure I spelled that wrong!).

I caught a glimpse of these silly kids making faces in the mirrored boxes. How great it was to be a kid!

This is looking up through one of the exhibits which was, as far as I can tell, a miniature abstract house made of wood pallets. It was definitely one of my favorites.

At one point along the way there was a bigger park like area along the path with lots of pieces in the grass. This one was obviously a tube of sorts. I took this photo with my fish-eye. The others came out well too but I love how this one just captures the nature of play. So many kids were running in and out of these things!

Another of my favorites was the flags. The shapes they made were really cool. I've always loved walking under flags. :)

This just cracked me up. Someone put big glass eyes into the cliff-side and made a face along the path. LOL. It was pretty funny. I almost got ran over taking this photo though--WAY too many people!

Today, for my birthday, I hit up the aquarium. Though the focus is of course off, the composition is good, I think. I love the color, the shadows, and the sun light coming through the surface. I think the mood is mysterious and menacing--just like those sharks. :)

And afterward, I hung out in Darling Harbour at a Latin Dance Festival with Jeremy. It was super fun and this death character in a Columbian dance definitely got us laughing.

Today was my first professional gig as a photographer, doing work for Sydney Tall Ships. SO MUCH FUN! And I even loved editting the photos. I'll let you know when they put some up on the website. :)

Some strong winds blew dust from South Australia all the way across the state and dumped it all in Sydney Wednesday morning. This is from outside my house and though it isn't a great photo (I had to work and couldn't go out for the day), it does give you an idea of how dark and beautiful the city was.

This is a giant fig tree just up the road from us, located in a graveyard. I just love walking by it nearly everyday on my way to the store. It's just such a powerful looking tree. Perhaps an Ent?

This is Bondi Beach in Sydney where all the city surfers go. Jeremy and I went out here to have a picnic and read in the park though I must admit, I was a little mesmerized by the surf boarders and didn't read much. I've always thought surf boarding was a cool sport.

Jeremy and I went to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary today and I can't say I took enough photos. I only got about 250... :) I think this one is my favorite but honestly, there are SO many good ones. Please check out my Flickr page to see more of these cute little animals!

This was taken in Sydney just outside the Oprah House. I was trying to get some cool photos of these interesting orb-like lamps along the footpath and noticed the reflection of the Oprah House in the glass. I figured it was an interesting way to see the city and I snapped off a few shots. What do you think? Epic success or epic fail?

I spent some time yesterday editting photos from India and thought I would add a few here (since I can't seem to do much these days with that old camera of mine...).

A beautiful mosque in Delhi. There were SO many people there and everyone was so curious about me but they were friendly and I had the best time photographing here.

I think this is my all time favorite from the mosque.

If you've ever been on a tuk tuk, you know why this long exposure came out so crazy. I love it. Very "arty" I think.

And the sky over Delhi when I flew in was AMAZING! What a beautiful sunrise! Or maybe it was a sunset.... I can't remember!

I think these buses in India are seriously road Monsters. Look at how big that thing is!! And the crazy artwork on it such as the demon head on the top. Monster Bus. Seriously.

"Propelled by Clean Fuel?" I somehow find that hard to believe. In Delhi, very little is "clean."
